The Kingfisher girls basketball team, led by head coach Taylor Young, is built on toughness, discipline, and defense. With a clear identity and a shared goal, the Lady Jackets have their sights set on playing in the new “Big House” at the end of the year and competing for a gold ball.
Coach Young said the team’s foundation begins with its defensive mindset and core values.
“Our team prides itself on discipline and toughness,” Young said. “Everything we do starts on the defensive end. We talk about respect, hard work, toughness, discipline, accountability, and competing every day.”
That commitment extends beyond the court.
“We do a lot of team-building activities together as a group and just try to find ways to spend time with each other off the floor,” Young shared.
The Lady Jackets have made significant strides in athleticism and transition play over the past year. Much of that progress stems from the team’s work ethic in the weight room.
“The girls have done a great job of hitting the weight room at the end of last season, this summer, and it has paid off,” Young said.
Young brings a wealth of experience to the Kingfisher program. Before taking over the Lady Jackets, she served as an assistant coach at Bishop McGuinness and Edmond Santa Fe High School. Her background as a former SEC player at Texas A&M has also shaped her approach to coaching.
“Most of my learning has come from coaches around me and my time playing in the SEC at Texas A&M,” Young said.
Practices under Young emphasize the fundamentals. The team spends time on ball handling, jump stops, passing, and form shooting before shifting to shell or defensive drills. Transition offense and defense are also key parts of each session, along with reviewing offensive sets.
“We always finish with shooting to end practice,” Young said.
With a culture grounded in discipline and teamwork, the Kingfisher girls basketball team continues to grow stronger each day, one practice, one defensive stop, and one goal at a time.
