Waukomis’ Abigail Overstreet – Cheer Spotlight – Presented by Mike Hanley Attorney at Law

Waukomis High School’s Abigail Overstreet

Waukomis High School senior cheerleader Abigail Overstreet credits her faith for guiding her through the ups and downs of high school athletics. A fixture on the Waukomis cheer squad, Overstreet said she leans on God daily as she leads her team from the front. “I am inspired by God because I feel like I would be where I am today without him and he guides me every day to where I’m meant to be,” Overstreet said.

Overstreet serves as cheer captain, a role that has pushed her to grow as both a leader and teammate. She embraces the responsibility that comes with setting the tone for practices, games and school events. Her favorite part of cheering, though, still comes back to simple moments with the girls beside her. “Getting to hang out with my friends and getting pretty,” she said with a laugh, describing what she enjoys most about being on the team.

A 12th-grader, Overstreet has always gravitated toward history in the classroom. She points to Waukomis history teacher and student council adviser Mrs. Gutsche as a major influence in her school life. “History was always my favorite subject and Mrs. Gutsche which is the history and my stuco advisor is my favorite,” Overstreet said.

Cheer doesn’t stop when the school year ends. Overstreet and her teammates spend much of their summer in the gym fine-tuning dances and learning new material to get ready for football and basketball season. “We are in the gym a lot doing dances and learning new cheers all summer,” she said.

Away from the sidelines, Overstreet enjoys staying active and social. She loves going out with friends and playing sports in her free time. Years of athletics have given her a perspective she knows will carry beyond high school. “To keep your head up because it’s not always gonna be easy and might not go perfectly but life moves on,” she said.

As for her teammates, Overstreet said she can’t single out just one who has made an impact on her. “I can’t pick one I love all of them and they all helped in a different way,” she said, reflecting the bond that has defined her Waukomis cheer experience.
