Cherokee’s Hayden Roberts

For Cherokee High School sophomore Hayden Roberts, basketball is more than a sport. It’s a lifelong commitment fueled by passion, focus, and purpose. Playing both point guard and shooting guard, Roberts has already established himself as one of the team’s most dynamic and dependable scorers, a player known for his energy and determination on both ends of the floor.
“What motivates me is knowing what I’m working toward – a college scholarship,” Roberts said. “That’s what keeps me in the gym every day.”
Roberts credits his parents for always pushing him to be his best and keeping him grounded as his success continues to grow. His dedication shows in the countless hours he spends improving his shot, tightening his handles, and studying the game. His breakout moment came during his freshman year, when he scored 25 points against Copan, a performance that proved he could thrive under pressure and lead his team when it mattered most.
In practice, Roberts loves competing against teammate Jordan Alvidrez, whose intensity fuels his own.
“Jordan pushes me every time we go head-to-head,” he said. “He makes me better.”
Cherokee head coach Matt Guffy praised the young standout.
“Hayden led us in scoring last year as a freshman with 12 points per game. He can score from anywhere on the floor and has great court vision. He’s extremely coachable, humble, and a true gym rat. He’ll be an important leader for us on and off the court this season.”
For Roberts, representing Cherokee means more than just wearing a uniform.
“The community is always there for us,” he said. “It makes me want to play even harder.”
Looking ahead, Roberts dreams of suiting up for the Oklahoma Sooners, continuing his athletic journey at the next level with the same drive and determination that defines him today.
