The Pioneer Pleasant Vale Mustangs enter the new baseball season with confidence rooted
in experience and unfinished business. After an impressive 32-5 run that ended in the state
semifinals, Head Coach David Riesen’s squad returns seven starters and a deep pitching
staff that could define their success. Despite having only two seniors, the roster is packed
with battle-tested juniors and emerging sophomores ready to step into bigger roles.
“Our pitching should be our strength with our top five guys all returning.”
Senior Branson Doyle anchors the team as a four-year starter and one of its most reliable
leaders. A dominant presence on the mound and in the middle of the lineup, Doyle already
has a signature moment under his belt as the winning pitcher in last year’s state
quarterfinal. His experience and composure set the tone for a relatively young roster.
In the leadoff spot, junior Cole Finch brings speed, consistency, and versatility. A switch
hitter who batted over .500 last season, Finch also swiped 38 bases and continues to shine
defensively in center field. His ability to get on base and create pressure makes him a
catalyst for the Mustangs’ offense.
Junior Ziah Faw Faw adds power and grit both on the mound and at shortstop. Known for
his electric arm, he pushed deep into the eighth inning of a tense semifinal matchup last
season before being pulled due to pitch count. When not pitching, his defensive instincts
and athleticism make him a cornerstone of the infield.
“Trey is one of those guys who just keeps getting better every season.”
That’s especially true for junior Trey Lostlen, a versatile player who contributes as both a
pitcher and outfielder. Entering his third year as a starter, Lostlen continues to develop into
a dependable hitter and key all-around performer.
With a strong returning core and hunger to take the next step, the Mustangs look poised to
turn last season’s near miss into something more.
