For Cimarron senior Ethan Butler, basketball has been more than just a game. It’s been a family tradition, a path to growth, and a driving force in his life. Earning a spot on the VYPE Top 100 for the second consecutive year, Ethan reflects on his journey, his roots, and the drive that has brought him this far. Ethan’s basketball story began long before high school.
“I started playing before I even entered Pre-K,” says Ethan.
His father played a huge role in his athletic development, making sure Ethan and his two brothers played together regularly. It was a way to bond, but also to push each other to be better. Ethan still draws inspiration from his parents, who have supported him through every season of life.
“They’ve always cared for me no matter what’s going on, and they push me to be the best I can be,” he says.
His deep faith in God is another cornerstone of his success.
“Just believing in God, following His Word, and trusting His process has made life a lot easier.”
Ethan also finds motivation in his teammates.
“My teammates mean a lot to me. They push everyone to be the best they can be,” he says.
Like many athletes, Ethan has faced challenges, including a tough ACL injury that interrupted his cross-country and track season. Even then, he stayed focused and used his training to prepare for basketball.
“Track and cross-country helped keep me in shape for the basketball season,” he explains.
Outside of basketball, Ethan channels his competitive spirit elsewhere.
“I am on the Esports teams for our school,” he shares.
One of his favorite basketball memories came last season when Cimarron earned its first win under Coach Reggie Island. It was a reminder that hard work and patience pay off. Preparation for moments like that begins long before tipoff, in the quiet moments before each game. Ethan puts on his headphones and listens to Drake or Rod Wave, letting the music calm his mind before taking the court.
When asked who his favorite opponent is, Ethan doesn’t hesitate.
“I would have to say my brother Drake, we have battled every day in practice since we were kids, and it’s always competitive wherever we are.”
As his high school basketball journey nears its end, Ethan’s story is about more than points or awards. It’s about faith, family, and perseverance. After graduation, he hopes to attend a JUCO college and continue developing his game. If not, he plans to go straight to work after high school. Either way, Ethan’s faith, determination, and work ethic will continue to guide him wherever life leads next.
