Garber’s Kennon Sharp

By Angela Brunk

As Garber High School senior Kennon Sharp enters his final basketball season, he’s ready to embrace a new role, one defined by leadership, experience, and pride in his team’s tradition. As a guard, Sharp understands the responsibility that comes with guiding a younger roster after graduating five seniors last year.

“My goal as a senior is to help lead this younger team to a competitive season,” Sharp said.

One of the competitions Sharp is most looking forward to is the Skeltur Tournament, a staple of Garber basketball.

“Playing against neighboring and rival schools with the Stride Center full of Garber fans is always exciting,” Sharp said.

Sharp’s motivation comes from his teammates and his love for competition.

“I like to compete, and I believe in the program Coach Upshaw is building,” he explained. “My coaches have also had a big influence on me by teaching me how to become a positive leader.”

Sharp reflects the values instilled in him by his parents, whom he calls his biggest role models.

“They’ve shown me what it means to work hard, be respectful, and take responsibility,” he said.

When it comes to success, Sharp points to three key factors. Consistency, passion, and time in the gym. Those traits have helped him make an impact on both ends of the floor.

“I led the team in charges,” he said. “I take pride in defense. Defense leads to offense.”

Among his favorite memories are winning the Next Era Tournament during his sophomore year and the team’s deep playoff runs in recent seasons. Over the summer, Sharp focused on improving chemistry with his younger teammates through team camps and workouts.

Off the court, Sharp balances sports with academics and activities. He’s on track to graduate as valedictorian with 22 concurrent hours and is involved in baseball, FCA, FFA, NHS, and raising and showing sheep.

A fourth-generation Garber Wolverine, Sharp takes pride in his roots.

“I’ve been born into everything I do, and I’m thankful for that,” Sharp shared.

Kennon Sharp is leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire Garber basketball for years to come.
