Ringwood’s Eli Baker – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Larry’s Home Oxygen

Eli Baker is a junior at Ringwood High School is now in his seventh year running cross country. Years ago, he was partially responsible for creating a team when one didn’t exist.

“In elementary school, we didn’t have a cross country team so one of my friends and I asked if we could have one and Coach Randolph started one for us,” he said.

Through all the years of competing one thing has remained constant, and that is the love and support of his parents. He said that plus the high expectations of his coach are what motivates him to strive for his best.

“My parents encouraging me on the sideline, with my coach also expecting me to improve and do my best,” Baker said of his motivation.

His teammates are also very important people in his life, pushing him to be better as well.

“They are all great encouragers,” he said. “We have great camaraderie.”

When asked who he looks to as a role model, one person came to mind first.

“Isai Rodriguez—I grew up watching him run to school with his backpack and cowboy boots,” said Baker. “He trained hard, worked hard, and put Ringwood on the map.”

In fact, when looking back on his cross country career so far, one stand out moment for him includes Isai Rodriguez.

“One of my favorite memories is participating in Ringwood’s melon dash when I had the opportunity to run against Isai Rodriguez,” said Baker.

When it comes to other runners, Baker welcomes all competition because it only serves to improve his own abilities.

“I appreciate all my opponents who are better than me,” he said. “They are yet another reason for me to strive to do better.”

In addition to cross country, Baker runs track, plays basketball, and plays trumpet in the high school band. He enjoys speech and debate class, which he jokes is his favorite subject other than lunch. After high school Baker plans to continue his education in college and one day open his own coffee business.
