Zaira Rocha, a senior at Woodward High School, has become a shining example of what it means to lead with passion, perseverance, and purpose. As a dedicated member of the Woodward cross country team, Rocha doesn’t just run races; she runs with heart, representing her teammates, family, school, and community every step of the way.

Starting cross country during her sophomore year, Rocha quickly found her place among a strong and supportive team.

“To be successful in cross country, it’s taken not only dedication but also self-belief,” she shared.

Despite starting alongside more experienced runners, her determination paid off when she helped her team qualify for the state meet in her very first season.

“That was the highlight of my career,” she recalls.

During that same year, not only did the girls’ team qualify for state, but the boys’ team qualified as well.

What motivates Rocha most is the people around her.

“What truly motivates me during our races and practices is my teammates, friends, and coach. I wouldn’t be able to get through the days without their support.”

Her coach and peers have pushed her to grow not just as an athlete, but as a leader who lifts others up.

“Being a runner doesn’t mean being fast. It means cheering on your teammates and keeping your mindset high. To represent my school and community means representing the heart of Northwest Oklahoma,” Rocha says with pride. “Running for Woodward isn’t just a hobby, it’s a privilege.”

Outside of athletics, Rocha stays busy with school activities. She participates in Woodward FFA, student council, class office, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and school pep club. Her influence extends beyond the course, inspiring others with her commitment to both academics and service.

One of Rocha’s biggest inspirations is her family.

“I admire their hard work and dedication to our family time, and their commitment to college and work. I truly aspire to be as committed as my parents and siblings,” she says.

While in the classroom, AP English teacher Mrs. Spicer has made a lasting impact, encouraging Rocha to embrace her potential and helping her grow as a writer.

After high school, Rocha plans to attend Oklahoma State University to major in Animal Science with a minor in Pre-Veterinary Science. Her ultimate goal is to become a large animal veterinarian.
