When the whistle blows and the game clock starts ticking, Woodward High School senior Kyson Halley locks in with quiet intensity. Playing center forward, striker, and center mid, he commands the field with the kind of focus that only comes from pure passion.
“What motivates me is my passion and love for the game,” Halley said.
That passion runs deep, driving him through early practices, tough matchups, and the mental grind of high-level play. Success, for Halley, hasn’t been luck; it’s been earned through persistence and a relentless commitment to improvement.
“Hard work, strong mind, consistency, and dedication,” he explained. “That’s what it takes to be successful.”
Soccer is more than just a sport for Halley; it’s a reflection of how he approaches life. He doesn’t take shortcuts, and he honors the support system that’s guided him along the way. His parents have been central to his journey, constantly setting the bar higher and encouraging him to reach it. Coach Ben Langford has also been a key influence, pushing him to grow both mentally and physically.
Another strong memory anchors his academic story.
“My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Schmitz, had a huge impact on me,” he recalled. “When I transferred to Woodward Schools, I wasn’t a strong reader. Her patience and encouragement gave me the confidence to try and to believe I was capable of more than I realized.”
Halley’s standout moment came when he scored the game-winning goal against Clinton, a moment that gave Woodward a shot at the playoffs and reinforced everything he’d worked for.
“That goal meant a lot, it showed what our team could do when we believed in each other,” he said.
These days, Halley balances FFA Shooting Sports, National Honor Society, and his spot on the Oklahoma Energy ECNL team with the same discipline that defines him on the field, helped, he admits, by his mom’s persistence in keeping him accountable.
“When I put on the jersey, I’m playing for something bigger than myself,” he said. “It’s about the pride and values of my school, my community, and everyone who believes in me.”
