Woodward’s Kadon Gaines – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Woodward High School

Kadon Gaines, a sophomore at Woodward High School, has spent much of his life on the basketball court. The game runs deep in his family, and his biggest inspiration comes from his mother, a former standout who earned the Gatorade Player of the Year honor in Oklahoma in 2001 before playing for the University of Texas. Gaines has set his sights on not only matching her accomplishments but surpassing them.

“My mom has been the biggest influence. She has taught me everything I know about basketball and continues to push me, on and off the court,” Gaines shared.

That drive and dedication have not gone unnoticed by his coaches. Coach Don and Coach Channing have played key roles in helping Gaines grow as both a player and a leader. The same can be said for Coach Williams, Coach Tre, and Coach Troy, who coaches and guides him during his time competing on the EYBL circuit.

Through their combined influence, Gaines has learned the value of perseverance and grit, a lesson that shone brightest during what he calls his “flu game.”

“I wasn’t supposed to play.  I was sick and barely able to stay awake, but I ended up scoring 45 points and had 15 rebounds that night. That experience reminded me how much heart and dedication this game demands,” Gaines added.

Off the court, Gaines balances his time with impressive dedication. He is a member of the National Honor Society and FFA, demonstrating the same commitment to excellence in the classroom as he does in athletics. Beyond his own pursuits, he gives back to his community and finds other ways to get on the court by volunteering as a youth basketball coach and referee, as well as assisting with Special Olympics events.

Gaines’s ultimate dream is to play college basketball and then reach the NBA, but his focus remains grounded in the work he needs to put in now.

“My coaches have taught me that to be successful in sports requires time, effort and sacrifice,” Gaines shared.

With his talent, determination, and deep love for the game, Gaines is proving that his story is only just beginning.
