Woodward’s Dathan Custar – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by FT&H – Mike Hanley

Woodward High School senior Dathan Custar has become a standout leader in both cross country and track, building a legacy of dedication, faith, and teamwork. A four-year competitor, Dathan has poured countless hours into training, determined to set an example for his teammates while pushing himself to new personal bests.

For Dathan, running is about more than just times on a clock or places on a podium. It’s a reflection of the support system that has helped shape him into the athlete and person he is today. “Some of the people that have had the biggest impact on me are my parents, my sister, and my coaches for the continuous support they give me,” he shared. “Every one of my current and former teammates has had a huge impact on me. It’s always an honor to make and achieve the goals we’ve set together.”

One of Dathan’s favorite memories came during his sophomore season, when the boys’ cross country team qualified for the state meet for the first time since 2007. The excitement of that moment—and the pride of representing Woodward at the highest level—remains a powerful motivator.

Balancing the demands of athletics and academics requires discipline and a focused approach. “It takes a lot of effort to balance school and sports,” Dathan said. “You have to be very good at not procrastinating.” Along the way, he has been inspired by teachers who have pushed him to excel beyond what he thought possible. “There are many teachers who have been influential in my life, but if I had to choose, it would be Mrs. Graff and Mrs. Spicer for encouraging me to always do my very best.”

Grounded in his faith, Dathan draws strength from his favorite scripture: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3) That verse serves as a reminder that no matter how big the challenge, trusting in God gives him the confidence to persevere.

As he prepares to finish his senior year, Dathan hopes to inspire younger athletes to pursue their goals with the same heart and determination that have carried him this far.
