There are people in our lives that help shape us into who we are and who we will become. Avery Case has a certain group of people that she looks up to as role models.
“The people that I look up to are the ones that might not have the most ideal set of circumstances in their lives, but continue to fight just as hard or harder to achieve their goals,” she said. “There are some people that are just dealt an unfortunate hand but refuse to let it deter them from being just as successful as the next guy. Their grit and determination is admirable and it inspires me to work harder.”
Case is a junior at Woodward High School, where she is a member of the cross country and track teams. She is also involved in the National Honor Society, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council, Student Government, the Superintendent’s Advisory Leadership Team, and the Pep Club.
As an athlete, Avery says that her success has come from being a part of the team and knowing what it takes to help the team be successful.
“Recognizing my role on the team has been the thing that has made me the most successful in my sports,” she said. “My running career has had plenty of ups and downs. If I am having a good year athletically and am setting personal bests every week, my role is to represent my team in the capacity of earning points and keeping us on the leaderboard. However, if I am not running the best times, my role is to keep the energy on the team alive. I have to remind myself that my teammates need to see me with a brave face rather than wallowing in self pity. I have gained humility from knowing that while I might not be the fastest, I can still have the best attitude.”
Competing for her school and community is not something that Case takes lightly.
“Being able to wear ‘Boomers’ across my chest is not just representative of the current population in Woodward,” she said. “But also the generations of athletes and patrons that have come before me. Our slogan is ‘Once a Boomer, always a Boomer’. I am proud of the legacy of honesty, hard work, and perseverance that I get to represent every time I put my jersey on.”
