For Sharon-Mutual High School senior Laney Marlatt, basketball has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember.
“I’ve been playing since first grade,” Marlatt shared. “What first got me interested in basketball would have to be my oldest brother because I grew up watching him.”
That early inspiration turned into a true love for the sport and a drive that has shaped Marlatt into one of the standout athletes at Sharon-Mutual High School. Her hard work and dedication has earned her a spot on the VYPE Top 100 list, an accomplishment she proudly calls both her favorite memory and the highlight of her basketball journey so far.
“Making VYPE Top 100 is a huge moment for me,” she said.
When it comes to competition, Buffalo High School stands out as her favorite opponent.
“As a team, we compete really well with them,” she said.
And when it comes to game day, Marlatt keeps her traditions fun and personal.
“My favorite pregame ritual is having the basketball coach do my hair because it’s always a cute hairstyle,” she stated.
She ends the game with her favorite treat, Sweetarts.
When asked who inspires her most, Marlatt says her older brother is her role model. It’s clear that family, faith, and perseverance play key roles in who she is, both as a player and as a person.
Marlatt’s competitive spirit doesn’t stop on the basketball court. She is a true multi-sport athlete, currently participating in volleyball, basketball, track, powerlifting, and cheerleading.
“Playing all the other sports has helped me stay in shape and better my skill set,” she explained.
Off the court, Marlatt shines just as bright. She’s involved in student leadership and extracurricular activities such as serving as vice president of FFA, president of NHS, secretary of FCA, and is the secretary of the senior class. Her favorite subject is math, and her love for agriculture has inspired her future plans. After graduation, Marlatt plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University to pursue a degree in agricultural business, with hopes of becoming an agricultural loan officer.
