Behind every strong team is a player whose energy lifts everyone around her, and for Seiling junior Kyrsten Unwin, that’s exactly where she shines. As a multi-sport athlete competing in softball, cheer, powerlifting, and track, Unwin finds her anchor on the softball field, where she stands tall at shortstop, both literally and figuratively.
“I am motivated by my love for the game,” she said. “I’ve loved this sport since I was little and always wanted to be the best I can be.”
That same drive has carried her through challenges that come with being one of the smallest players on the field. But Unwin sees that as fuel, not a limitation. Every practice, every inning, and every game is an opportunity to prove that heart can outplay height.
“It has taken a lot of time and effort to be successful,” she explained. “Especially with being the smallest one on the field.”
Her proudest moment so far came during the slow-pitch state tournament last year, a defining milestone in her career.
“The environment was so fun, and I loved how our team worked together throughout every game,” she said.
Along the way, she’s been inspired by people who lead with both talent and grace.
“My biggest role model is Keirstin Briggs,” Unwin said. “She was always an amazing leader, and I loved playing with her.”
She also finds daily encouragement from Mrs. Clark, a teacher known for her joy and kindness, qualities Kyrsten tries to reflect in how she treats others.
Whether she’s studying on the bus ride to an away game or cheering for her teammates from the dugout, Unwin carries her sense of purpose everywhere she goes. She’s an active member of FCA, STUCO, and the BETA Club, all while balancing demanding practices and academics.
“It means a lot to represent Seiling school and community,” she said. “Everyone is so supportive of our team.”
Grateful for her parents, her coach, and her faith, Unwin’s outlook stays simple and sincere: give everything you have, appreciate the people who helped you get there, and always play with heart.
