Q&A with Woodward’s Yadira Reyes – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Stephenson Insurance Center

VYPE: What grade are you in, and what sports do you play?

Yadira: I am a senior at Woodward High School. I play defender in soccer and recently finished my softball season as a utility player.

Who is your favorite teacher from any grade?

My favorite teacher is Mrs. Nail. She’s been my favorite during senior year because she’s so patient with all of her students, including me. I always feel like I can talk to her about any problems I’m having, and she tries to help me find solutions if I don’t have any.

Who inspires you?

Kamber inspires me because she pushes me to work my hardest, especially during lifts and conditioning on the field. She motivates me to keep going even when things get tough.

What teammate has left the biggest impression on you?

Lauren has left the biggest impression on me because she’s never afraid to speak up during huddles. Her confidence and leadership help keep our team focused and motivated. She also balances it out by making us laugh all the time.

Which professional athlete do you look up to?

I look up to Paolo Maldini because he’s considered one of the greatest defenders in the world. I admire his leadership, consistency, and the way he stayed calm and composed under pressure.

What has your sport taught you that makes you a better person?

My sport has taught me that mistakes happen, so I focus on staying positive and learning from them. That mindset helps me on the field and in life.

What accomplishment or memory are you most proud of?

Making it to state my freshman year is my proudest accomplishment. The memory I’m most proud of is the friendships and laughs I’ve shared with my teammates.

What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

The best advice I’ve received is that “stuff happens.” It’s taught me that not everything will go perfectly, so I try to stay calm, laugh it off, and focus on the next play.

Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.

I want to give a shoutout to my friends and family for always supporting me and helping me become the person I am today.
