Laverne High School’s Jaisly Masters
Jaisly Masters is still early in her high school career, but the Laverne High School sophomore is already setting a tone of confidence, resilience and team-first leadership on the softball field.
Masters, a catcher, embraces one of the game’s most demanding positions. She said the biggest challenge is pushing through fatigue and discomfort while staying locked in every pitch. “The hardest thing about being a catcher is pushing yourself, especially when you’re tired, hot and hurting,” she said.
Her approach at the plate mirrors that toughness. Masters relies on a mental routine built around confidence and timing. “My process at the plate starts with confidence,” she said. “I repeat ‘yes’ over and over to stay locked in and get the pitcher’s timing down.”
Masters credits much of her mindset to Texas catcher Reese Atwood, who she says inspires her through work ethic and composure. “She competes with confidence and gives her best effort,” Masters said. “She’s shown that success comes from dedication and consistency.”
That same consistency shows up in how Masters approaches her team. She values the family atmosphere and the balance between competition and enjoyment. “We feel like a family, not just teammates,” she said. “Whether we’re winning or losing, we keep positive attitudes and push each other to be our best.”
Masters pointed to teammate Breelyn Newby as both the team’s energy and a personal motivator. “She’s always making everyone laugh,” Masters said. “But she’s also one of the hardest-working athletes I’ve been around and challenges me to be my best.”
Off the field, Masters enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing catch with her mom and fishing at her grandparents’ ranch. She is also active in basketball and cheer, showing her versatility as a student-athlete.
In the classroom, English is her favorite subject, and she credits teacher Ms. Davis for creating a positive learning environment. “You always leave her class having learned something new,” Masters said.
For Masters, the lessons from athletics extend beyond wins and losses. “Sports have taught me to stay positive, work hard and never give up,” she said.
Those lessons, combined with her drive and team-first mentality, continue to shape Masters into a player to watch at Laverne.
