Laverne High School’s Bristol and Breelyn Newby
Laverne High School sisters Bristol and Breelyn Newby are building a shared legacy on the softball field, each contributing in distinct ways while staying grounded in family, faith and teamwork.
Bristol Newby, a junior, anchors the infield at third base, where quick reactions and toughness are essential. She said the hardest part of her position is handling sharply hit balls, but she embraces the challenge with a steady routine and competitive mindset.
Before stepping into the batter’s box, Bristol twirls her bat twice, a simple ritual that helps her stay focused.
“Every member is just as important as the other,” she said. “It’s not a one-person team.”
Bristol draws inspiration from NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, citing his work ethic and rise to success. Off the field, she enjoys fishing with her dad, playing basketball and studying Japanese. She is also active in her community, volunteering at a local food bank and serving as an officer in her FFA chapter.
For Bristol, relationships define the experience. She credits teammates like Raegan for making the game fun and values the team’s chemistry, noting how much she enjoys simply being around her teammates. Whether it is post-practice trips for drinks or shared laughs, those moments stand out as much as any win.
Younger sister Breelyn Newby, a freshman pitcher, brings a different but equally impactful presence. As a pitcher, she carries the responsibility of setting the tone each game.
“Everyone depends on you,” Breelyn said. “It’s a hard position, but I love it.”
Breelyn’s inspiration comes from her faith, referencing the story of David as a reminder that she is never alone. That belief carries into her approach at the plate, where she repeats a personal affirmation to stay confident regardless of the outcome.
She said one of the most important lessons athletics has taught her is maintaining positivity, especially during difficult moments. “It’s not about how you react in the good times, but how you react in the bad,” she said.
Breelyn values the sense of family within her team, describing it as a group she can trust and have fun with. Off the field, she enjoys reading and staying involved in other sports, including basketball, while also supporting fellow student-athletes.
Together, the Newby sisters represent a balance of grit and perspective. Whether it is Bristol’s leadership and consistency or Breelyn’s energy and faith-driven approach, both athletes highlight what it means to compete with purpose while staying connected to the people and values that matter most.
