The Hooker fastpitch softball team takes the field this season with a clear sense of promise built around youth, opportunity, and growth. After finishing 11-15 a year ago, the program, led by head coach Aaron Ruiz in his 13th year at the school, looks to turn last season’s challenges into valuable experience. A young roster will be asked to step into larger roles, and the expectation is that, as the season unfolds, those game reps will fuel rapid development and confidence. Ruiz sees this year as a crucial building block, one in which his players gain “a ton of experience” that will strengthen the program now and in the future.
Sophomore infielder and pitcher Sammi Butler stands out as a key returning starter and a central figure in Hooker’s plans. Last season, she primarily patrolled second base, but this year her responsibilities expand significantly. Sammi will catch, handle innings in the circle, and see time at shortstop, showcasing her versatility and competitiveness. Her strong work ethic and natural leadership qualities make her a tone-setter for the team, and Hooker will look for her to deliver a big year both in performance and in guiding younger teammates.
Freshman utility player Kayleigh Johnson brings an immediate spark to the lineup. She swings the bat well and will see action at third base, shortstop, and in the pitching rotation, giving Hooker another adaptable weapon capable of impacting games in multiple ways. Her coachable nature and commitment to working hard throughout the summer position her to make a quick impact at the varsity level.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Lerady Medina will carry much of the workload. She has invested considerable time into refining her craft, and her dedication is expected to pay off as she leads the staff through the season. In the outfield, junior Nicole Avalos provides stability and leadership. Known as a great teammate who consistently goes above and beyond, Nicole serves as a vocal presence in the dugout and a dependable figure who always looks to do what is right for the team. With this mix of emerging leaders and determined underclassmen, Hooker enters the season focused on growth, resilience, and laying the groundwork for sustained success.
