Athletes invest a lot of time and effort into their sport in order to be at the top of their game when it comes time to compete. Along with playing their best for themselves, athletes like Waukomis’ Reed Hellman know that they are actually playing for a larger group.
“It means a lot to me to be able to represent my school when I play,” Reed said. “We are a small tight-knit community and everyone supported me through my injury last year and I am looking forward to representing them on the court this year.”
Hellman is in his junior year at Waukomis High School. He plays basketball and baseball for the Chiefs. Outside of sports, he is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Throughout his life, there have been a number of people that have had an impact on his life and helped shape him into the person that he is today and will become.
“My mom and dad are the biggest role models in my life,” he said. “They have taught me how to persevere through difficult times. I have also had teachers that have helped me. One of my favorites was Mrs Simunek. My fourth grade year was tough and she helped me overcome the challenges.”
While he works hard to be his best at sports, Reed also has to put a lot of time into his school work. While it can be tough at times, he says that you just have to stay focused and get it all done.
“It takes a lot to balance everything that I do. I have to make sure I get everything done before the day is over,” Hellman said.
Hellman has made a lot of memories during his time playing sports, but he has one that stands out as his favorite.
“I think my favorite moment is going to play on the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball court,” he recalled.
