At Waukomis High School, senior Reed Hellman stands tall, both literally and figuratively, as a leader and key contributor to his team. A two-sport athlete competing in both basketball and baseball, Reed plays center on the court and first base on the diamond, bringing energy and leadership to every game he plays.

Reed’s motivation comes from a deeply personal place.

“I recently lost a great friend and teammate to a tragic accident,” he shared. “It taught me to never take a day or moment for granted.”

That experience has fueled his work ethic and reminded him to appreciate every practice, every game, and every opportunity to compete.

He also credits his parents for their constant encouragement and Mrs. Hicks, one of his teachers, for her positive influence.

“She’s always in a great mood and willing to help,” Reed said. “She’s one of the reasons I’ve stayed focused and motivated through high school.”

Reed’s success is built on years of hard work and determination.

“It’s taken time, dedication, and a lot of hours in the gym and on the field,” he said.

One of his favorite memories came when Waukomis defeated Hominy to advance to Area, a victory that meant as much to the town as it did to the team.

Head coach Allen Hicks praised his senior leader: “Reed is a strong player standing at 6’6” –

He’s a phenomenal rebounder and finishes strong around the rim. His footwork is excellent for a big man, and he has the ability to grab a rebound and go coast to coast.”

Representing Waukomis is an honor Reed carries with pride.

“When I broke my leg my sophomore year, the community supported me the whole way,” he said. “Now, every time I play, I do it for them.”

With his size, skill, and heart, Reed continues to embody the resilience, loyalty, and love that define Waukomis Chiefs basketball.
