Waukomis High School’s Addyson Niles
Addyson Niles, a sophomore at Waukomis High School in Waukomis, Oklahoma, has emerged as a dedicated varsity athlete and campus leader whose commitment extends well beyond the sidelines. As a backspot on the cheer squad, Niles plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and success of stunts, a position that demands focus, strength and trust among teammates.
Niles credits STUCO advisor Laura Gutsche as a primary source of inspiration, describing her as a steady support system since middle school who encouraged her to embrace her identity and step into leadership roles. That influence is evident in Niles’ campus involvement: she serves as secretary and treasurer of Student Council, participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and competes on the Quiz Bowl team. Her favorite subject is math, and she names Mrs. Gutsche as her favorite teacher, reflecting the meaningful mentorship that has shaped her high school experience.
The cheer team’s preparation begins well before the first day of school, with practices running from late May through the start of the academic year. For Niles, the highlight of being on the team is the camaraderie and the challenge of mastering new cheers, stunts and choreography. She looks up to teammate Rylie Hicks for her readiness to learn and admires Paityn Willard’s work ethic and determination to acquire new skills, qualities Niles strives to emulate.
Athletics, she says, has taught her a valuable life lesson: perfection is not the goal—persistence is. “You’re not going to be perfect and that’s okay, just keep trying and you’ll get it,” Niles said. That mindset guides her approach to both stunts and schoolwork.
Outside of athletics and student government, Niles enjoys spending free time with friends and shopping. In her small hometown, her favorite spot is Mo’s Place, a local cafe known for breakfast, lunch and what she calls “the most delicious drinks.” The sense of community there mirrors the supportive environment she finds at Waukomis High School, where she continues to grow as an athlete, leader and student.
Through her blend of athletic discipline, service and academic engagement, Niles exemplifies the well-rounded student-athlete, building a foundation that will serve her long after graduation.
