Abigail Overstreet’s parents grew up playing sports. Her mother was a cheerleader and softball player, while her father was a three-time state champion at Pioneer High School.
“Seeing my dad’s championship rings and my mom’s cheer accomplishments have made me push hard to have those achievements to share with my children someday,” Overstreet said.
Now a Waukomis High School sophomore, Overstreet is leading a successful career in softball, basketball, track, cheer and leadership.
“I’m student council vice president, FCCLA president and a member of FCA,” Overstreet said. “I feel like being as active in school as you can is a great way to show the younger kids how important it is to be involved and have fun while doing it.”
Overstreet has attended Waukomis since Pre-K and started playing YMCA basketball and softball at 4 years old. She was named an all-conference selection her freshman year and won rookie of the year for the Chiefs, also appearing in the Tri-County All-Star game. She currently plays travel softball for the Oklahoma Athletics.
Though she is talented in several areas, softball has her heart above all other sports and activities. She hopes to continue her playing career at the collegiate level.
“I love running the bases. It’s fun to try to make the catcher throw me out and then I steal on them,” Overstreet said.
Speaking of running, Overstreet started running track in fifth grade and qualified for the state track meet in the 300m hurdles and two relays last year, one of which placed sixth.
“I loved that feeling of being on the podium after our hard work, and that has pushed me this year to get there again,” Overstreet said. “I believe with as much as I am involved with, I had to work hard or I wouldn’t be competing at the level I do right now.”
Overstreeth danced from third grade until this year, but dropped it to free time in her schedule to dedicate to her various activities. She started cheering in fifth grade and earned the Chief Pride Award last year. She was recently named a captain for her junior year.
