VYPE: What do you love most about being a student-athlete at Medford HS?
Hammons: What I love most about being a student athlete at Medford is the community. We are very fortunate and blessed to have amazing support throughout the community. It’s such an awesome feeling knowing that I have so many people rooting for me and my teammates. Our teachers are also very supportive of us athletes.
VYPE: What’s your favorite subject in school and do you have a favorite teacher?
Hammons: My favorite subject in school right now is anatomy and physiology or English. My favorite teacher is Ms. Boyer
VYPE: What do you do with the downtime during meets?
Hammons: During my down time at meets I spend some time stretching and getting ready for my next events/recovering from my last, but I spend most of my time cheering and yelling for my other teammates while they run their events.
VYPE: What events do you participate in at your meets?
Hammons: I run the 2-mile relay, the open 800M run, and I also do long jump.
VYPE: What event would you like to try one day?
Hammons: I think it would be so fun to try pole vault.
VYPE: Which teammate always impresses you the most or do you have a former teammate who left an impression on you?
Hammons: My former teammate Jayda Kilian left an impression on me. She was a very good leader but she always made practices and meets so much fun. She was so goofy, lighthearted, and she made a big impact on my life. She was a mentor for me.
VYPE: What’s the best advice you’ve been given about being a track athlete?
Hammons: It’ll be over fast. You are stronger than your mind is telling you. It’s all a mental battle and you are stronger. You can!
VYPE: Who has been a big influence in your life? Explain.
Hammons: Coach Kelley has had a very big impact in my life. She has coached me for a long time. She has seen my worst days, my best days, my smiles, and my tears. She has taught me what it means to leave a legacy and how to be a good leader. The most important thing she has taught me and modeled for me is being a strong, confident, god-fearing young woman.
VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of school and sports?
Hammons: In my free time I enjoy being outside and being with friends and family.
VYPE: What would you like to do after you graduate?
Hammons: . I will be cheering in college at Southern Nazarene University and I will be majoring in nursing to become a registered nurse.
