When it comes to setting goals, Jacoby Justus keeps it simple but meaningful. “I’m looking to get better on defense, learning the game more and being an asset on the defensive side of the ball,” the Oklahoma Bible Academy junior said. That focus on growth has been a driving force as he continues to develop into a leader on both sides of the ball.
The offseason has been a time of transformation for Justus and his teammates. “This year, we have workouts as a team. This offseason, watching what we’ve ate and really taken care of our bodies,” he explained. That commitment to preparation has given OBA new confidence as the season unfolds.
Improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed. “The biggest improvements that I have seen are definitely the experience and effort to do their jobs on the field,” Justus said. And with a stronger, more seasoned roster, expectations are higher than ever. “We want to win a district game, host a playoff game and win.”
The difference, he believes, is maturity. “We were a young team last year so coming into this season, we have a lot more experience.”
On the field, Justus has responsibilities that demand toughness and discipline. “I play linebacker and center,” he said. Those positions require both physicality and focus, and Justus embraces the challenge of being in the middle of the action.
Preparation is key to his success. “When I look at the defense, I look for any reads or hints that I have picked up on film that week, making sure our defense is lined up correctly,” he explained. His pregame routine helps him lock in as well. “After school, I chill, get my mind right and eat my pregame meal.”
Once kickoff comes, the mission is clear. “Just to do my job and lead my teammates on the field,” Justus said. Leadership, in fact, is how he hopes to be remembered. “I want people to remember me as hard working, dedicated to what I did and a leader.”
That mindset is shared across the roster. “This team has high ambitions,” he added.
Looking back, certain moments stand out as defining experiences. “Our playoff run my freshman year,” he said. It gave him a taste of what the program is capable of—and what he hopes to achieve again.
For Justus, football is just one part of his identity, but it reflects his determination.
