Sophomore right-hander Cal Cayot is stepping onto the mound this spring at Oklahoma Bible Academy with clear expectations for himself and his team. “As a pitcher, I’m hoping to just have quality starts and a lot of strikeouts. While as a batter, I’m hoping to bat above .450,” Cayot said.
The energy around the Trojans reflects big ambitions. “The team morale has been up after a really successful offseason, we are ready to compete,” he said. That work is already paying off in key areas. “We are doing a better job putting the ball in play and making plays in the field on the defensive side,” Cayot said.
Everything points toward a deep postseason push. “Our biggest goal is the state tournament and overall to go as deep into the postseason as possible,” he said. “We’re developing pitchers to help us get there.” Cayot believes the lineup will be a major weapon. “Our biggest team strength is our lineup,” he said. “We are really young, but we have a lot of guys who hit the ball really well.”
He fills several crucial roles. “Starting pitcher, shortstop, second base,” Cayot said. When he sizes up opponents defensively, he keeps it simple. “I look for guys who can make the routine plays and do them well,” he said.
Preparation starts well before first pitch. “I normally make sure I’m eating good and well rested then make sure my pregame is high quality,” Cayot said. His mindset is grounded in faith and competitiveness. “My mindset is first to glorify Jesus Christ then to strive in every aspect to help my team win,” he said.
Cayot already has a vision for how he wants to be remembered in an OBA uniform. “I would like my legacy to be of the best pitcher to pitch here but also as a great teammate and good player,” he said. He knows he is surrounded by like-minded teammates. “Our team is filled with some of the hardest workers I’ve been around, one through nine we all love the game and strive to be the best,” Cayot said.
Music helps him lock in on game days. “Probably any Drake or Bad Bunny,” he said of his go-to hype choices. On-field highlights are already stacking up. “Probably our regional tournament run last year as well as a no hitter last year,” Cayot said.
