Hennessey’s Brytan Gardner – Baseball Spotlight

Hennessey High School’s Brytan Gardner

As a freshman shortstop for the Hennessey High School baseball team, Brytan Gardner already carries himself like a seasoned varsity veteran, blending natural talent with a quiet toughness that fits perfectly up the middle of the diamond.

Gardner, who also plays basketball and football, said he spends much of his free time either in the gym or working on his game, determined to stay ready for whatever his coaches need. “I play baseball, basketball, and football, so I am always keeping myself in shape,” Gardner said. That multi-sport workload has helped him develop strength and resilience that he believes will serve him long after high school.

“Athletics has taught me my strength,” Gardner said. “And that I can take a good butt chewing and not even flinch.” That ability to absorb criticism and keep moving forward shows up at shortstop, where every pitch could turn into a split-second decision with the game on the line.

Gardner said the most challenging part of playing shortstop is mental, not physical. “Always knowing the right decision,” he said. “Never throw to first when you’ve got a runner on third.” That awareness is critical in the heart of the infield, where one mistake can change an inning.

Even with the pressure of varsity baseball as a freshman, Gardner keeps the game fun by leaning on his teammates and coaches. He describes the Eagles’ dugout as a second home. “Everything that involves the team,” he said when asked what he enjoys most about being part of Hennessey baseball. “They are my family.”

That family atmosphere stretches from the top of the roster to the last man in the dugout. Gardner said he loves the energy and humor his teammates bring every day. “I just love my team,” he said. “They are hilarious and just fun to be around. My coach is awesome too. They all keep the game fun.”

He also isn’t shy about pointing out the voices that keep everyone loose. When asked who is the most vocal or keeps the team laughing, Gardner didn’t hesitate. “Definitely Hayden Hubbard or myself,” he said.

Away from the field, Gardner carries that same focus into the classroom. He lists English as his favorite subject and points to Mr. Parker as his favorite teacher. That balance between academics and athletics helps round out a schedule packed with practices, games and workouts.

On the field, Gardner brings a hitter’s mindset that fits perfectly with his aggressive defensive position. Asked about his favorite pitch to hit, he didn’t overthink it. “Middle inside fastball, probably,” he said. It is the kind of pitch a confident shortstop expects to drive when he gets it.

Gardner also draws inspiration from beyond Hennessey. He points to Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran as a player he looks up to. “Because of his story and how I can relate to it,” Gardner said. Like Duran, Gardner is working to carve out his own path, relying on work ethic, toughness and a deep love for the game.

He even has a strong opinion on baseball’s unwritten rules, showing he pays attention to the sport’s culture as much as its mechanics. “Don’t bunt to break a no-hitter,” Gardner said. It is an old-school stance from a young player who respects the game, his opponents and the opportunity he has each time he takes the field for Hennessey.
