Hennessey Eagles Football Preview – Presented by Integris Health

HENNESSEY EAGLES

Coach: MARK COX

1-9

OFFENSE

The Eagles are looking to bounce back after a 1-9 season a year ago. Head coach Mark Cox likes the makeup of his team and is looking forward to seeing what they will do. “I am excited about our season,” he said. “We have a talented group of incoming freshmen and several other new players on our team. Plus, our returning players have been working hard to improve themselves as athletes since the end of our football season. So, I think we should be a much-improved team this season.” Returning to lead the team at quarterback is Gunnar Holder (5-10, 170, Sr.). He threw for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Joining Holder in the backfield will be Jessin Hardin (5-7, 160, Sr.), who averaged 5.64 yards per carry last season at running back. He will look to continue that solid performance this season. The wide receiver duo of Kevin Trillo (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Jakob Johns (5-6, 175, Sr.) will be targets for Holder to get the ball to. They combined for 56 receptions for 709 yards and five scores last season. Center Gunnar Carthel (6-0, 185, Sr.) and guard Erik Rojo (5-10, 265, So.) will maintain things on the offensive line and work to keep the defense out of the backfield.

DEFENSE

The Hennessey defense will work to keep their opponents big plays to a minimum. Johns and Hardin will be at linebacker after a solid season a year ago. Johns ended the season with 51 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble, while Hardin averaged 7.6 tackles per game and added a sack. Trillo will see time at outside linebacker and safety. He averaged 8.1 tackles last season and had four fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and a sack. Wreaking havoc on opposing offenses will be the guys on the defensive line. Luis Macias-Montoya (6-0, 175, Jr.) and Carthel will anchor this group. Macias-Montoya had 19 tackles last year and Carthel totaled 27 tackles and two sacks. After having 46 total tackles last year, safety Tyler Byrd (6-0, 150, Jr.) will be patrolling the secondary. Assistant coaches this season are Nathan Hill, Matthew Fuksa, Aaron Pitts, Chris Rapp, Dylan Hatchel, and Logan Macy.
