Kooper Hughes – Garber High School Football, Basketball, and Baseball

by Scott Metz

Kooper Hughes is a multisport athlete for the Garber High School Wolverines, playing football, basketball, and baseball. As he enters his senior year, Kooper plays the position of Right Guard and Nose Guard, in football. Kooper has been playing sports for almost his entire life. Kooper explained, “I started playing baseball when I was 4, and then I started basketball in kindergarten. I started flag football in first grade and finally padded up in 3rd grade.”

Asked who are some of his biggest influences, Kooper did not hesitate. Kooper proclaimed, “My biggest influences and role models are Coach Mark Timberlake and my dad (Coach Koy Hughes), of course. Coach Timberlake has been there since I started playing; he is for sure a guy I look up to, and my dad- he has been the best role model on and off the field being coach at practice, and dad at home.”

Kooper also looks up towards an English teacher, his teammates, and classmates. Kooper stated, “English teacher, Mrs.Mary Sloat, pushed me and all of my teammates, and classmates to a level most of us did not even think was possible.”

Kooper is proud to represent his school and his community. Kooper elated, “The greatest part about it happened when I was at my first Garber basketball game a few weeks after I was born. I’m a 4th generation student at Garber. I have watched my older cousins win 2 state championships in football and a basketball state title, so I have just always been a Garber boy and would not change it for anything.”

In addition to being a multisport athlete, Kooper is an officer for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America atGarber High School. He is also involved in The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as a member of The National Honor Society.

After graduating from Garber High School, Kooper plans on pursuing higher education, and also plans on playing college football.
