Enid High School’s Keon Young
For Enid High School junior Keon Young, baseball is more than a sport — it’s a lesson in responsibility, discipline, and the power of teamwork. As a standout center fielder and pitcher for the Plainsmen, Young approaches both the classroom and the diamond with a quiet confidence shaped by the people who’ve inspired him most.
“My mom inspires me,” Young said. “She’s always there for me and always finds a way to make something happen.”
That steady support has helped him succeed through the demands of high school athletics. Young, now in his junior year, said his favorite subject is math, thanks to a teacher who went above and beyond for her students.
“My favorite teacher of all time is Miss Sara Garris,” he said. “She was understanding, patient, and supportive. She even gave up her free time to come watch me play football in Tulsa.”
On the diamond, Young thrives in the heart of the action — whether patrolling center field or taking command of the mound. But pitching, he admits, comes with its own challenges. “The most difficult thing about pitching is that you’re alone on the mound,” he said.
“No one can help you throw strikes. If you’re not producing, your team really can’t help you.”
Still, the sense of camaraderie among his teammates makes every challenge worth it. “We all get along and have a common goal,” Young said.
“The camaraderie we have — I feel like we all support each other and have the same goal.”
When he’s not competing, Young enjoys keeping his swing sharp in the batting cages, working out, or spending downtime on video games. His favorite pitch to hit is the Fastball.
Among his teammates, Young said Cal is the most vocal, while Baylor keeps the team laughing. It’s that blend of energy and humor that makes the Plainsmen dugout a special place to be.
And as for his favorite unwritten rule in baseball? Young doesn’t hesitate:
“Not bunting to break up a no-hitter.”
For Keon Young, that respect for the game — and for those who share it with him — is what makes baseball more than just a pastime. It’s a way of life.
