For Enid High School junior David Shepherd, golf isn’t just a seasonal sport, it’s a year-round pursuit fueled by determination and steady progress. Serving as the team’s 1st bag, Shepherd has established himself as the steady presence at the top of the Plainsmen lineup, with his competitive drive rooted in a simple motivation: “Getting better every single day and working toward the next level.”
Shepherd’s path in golf began with support from those closest to him, his teammates. “My biggest influences are my teammates because they push me to get better every day,” he said. That daily encouragement, paired with hours of year-round practice “despite the weather,” has shaped his competitive mindset. Shepherd is often the last one off the course as sunlight fades, tirelessly refining his game until dark.
Among his proudest moments came early in his career when, as a freshman, he competed at the Class 6A state championship. That experience reinforced his drive to represent Enid with confidence and pride. “It means a great deal coming from Oklahoma’s biggest small town,” Shepherd said. The opportunity to carry that spirit into each tournament remains a deep source of pride for him.
In the classroom, Shepherd credits Mrs. Bush as a major influence. “She’s made me do my best and taught me to be accountable every day,” he said. The lessons learned through academics complement the focus required to manage golf and extracurriculars such as Choir and National Honor Society. He approaches the balance with what he calls “careful and thoughtful planning along with dedication.”
On the course, Shepherd’s favorite competition comes in practice against teammate Austin Kalow, whose high skill level keeps both players sharp. He’s also quick to highlight freshman Kendall Trammell as an underappreciated contributor, praising his spirit and competitiveness.
Shepherd admires professional golfer Adam Scott, following him closely on social media for inspiration. It’s fitting, his own steady discipline and quiet confidence mirror Scott’s style. And with his commitment to constant improvement, David Shepherd continues shaping himself into one of Enid’s most promising young golfers.
