Deer Creek-Lamont’s Will Muegge – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Elizabeth Hiatt – Shelter Insurance

Deer Creek-Lamont junior sprinter Will Muegge has built his reputation on the same qualities that drive one of his sports heroes. Inspired by Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Muegge said he admires the NBA guard “because of his dedication and work ethic,” and he tries to bring that same approach to the track.

Muegge competes in the 100 and 200 meters, along with the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, events that demand both explosive speed and consistency. The relay side of the sport is where he finds some of his favorite moments as a member of the Deer Creek-Lamont track and field team. “Hanging out with my friends and doing relays” is what he enjoys most about being part of the squad, he said.

Between races, Muegge stays locked in on preparation. He uses his down time to stretch and make sure his body is ready for the next race, a routine that reflects the discipline he has developed through years of competition. Track has already given him lessons he expects to carry throughout his life. “Hard work,” he said, is the biggest thing athletics has taught him.

In the classroom, Muegge is drawn to science, and he points to Mrs. Mills as his favorite teacher from any grade. That academic interest ties directly into his future plans. After graduation, he hopes to run college track while studying optometry, blending his passion for speed with a long-term career goal.

Muegge is still looking to expand his track résumé, too. One event he would like to try someday is the long jump, a challenge that would test his athleticism in a new way. As he continues through his junior season, he leans on a simple piece of advice that guides his training and racing: “If you want to accomplish your goals, you have to want it more than everyone else.”
