Chisholm High School sophomore golfer Dane Deterding has already found a steady formula for success on the course: discipline, family support and a love for the finer points of the game.
Deterding, who says golf has taught him “to stay disciplined,” has leaned on that mindset as he continues to grow his game for the Longhorns. That discipline shows up most in the area he has focused on the most, his short game and the club he trusts when the pressure is on. His favorite club is his pitching wedge, which he calls the one he makes his best shots with, a key weapon for scoring around the greens.
Some of his best golf memories have come alongside his biggest role model, his dad. Deterding’s lowest round is a 72, shot during a casual round while playing with his father, the same person he credits for helping him become who he is today. Away from tournaments and practice, the two also share time in the garage, where Deterding enjoys working on cars with his dad, further strengthening a bond that carries over to competition.
Deterding also finds motivation in the professional game. His favorite golfer is Justin Thomas, whom he describes as fun to watch and a good guy, a blend of energy and character that Deterding admires as he develops his own style on the course.
At school, Deterding’s favorite subject is English, and he points to Mrs. Ransom as his favorite teacher, adding another layer of support to his daily routine. When he is with his teammates, some of his favorite moments come before the first tee shot is ever struck, especially team trips to Jiffy before tournaments and the time spent together on the road.
His home base is Oakwood Country Club, his favorite course because it is both familiar and “a really nice course,” a place where he continues to refine the short game he has worked on the most. As his high school career continues, Deterding’s blend of discipline, family influence and team camaraderie gives Chisholm golf a promising presence for the future.
