Canton High School junior Nadia Luna maintains a delicate balance as both a cheerleader and class vice president.
“Being a student-athlete to me means balancing between sports and grades,” Luna said. “It is important to prioritize academics because if you start putting all of your time on sports your grades will start to drop which would mean you would not be able to play sports. It is important to have a healthy balance of both.”
Luna takes leadership seriously.
“I like to be a positive role model for my classmates, underclassmen and elementary students,” Luna said. “I hope they learn that no matter what the situation may be, if you stick to your goal you will accomplish it. I also hope they see that even if it may be difficult, that doesn’t mean to give up.”
Luna struggles with migraines which often leave her feeling dizzy, losing vision and sometimes fainting. She takes medicine, which helps, but still endures intense pain at times. Regardless, she has refused to let that shake her confidence or work ethic
“I’ve learned that even though I may have migraines my teammates count on me and I still have my academics to accomplish,” Luna said. “Being an excellent teammate means having a positive attitude, uplifting teammates and helping teammates through any situations.”
Luna seeks motivation from her cheer coach, Mrs. Thompson, as well as her mother, father and sister. Accomplishing goals is an indispensable part of Luna’s life.
“My goals for the rest of the school year are to keep my grades up and complete my cosmetology class while keeping up with school work, cheer, and my job,” Luna said. “My goals after high school are to get a job in a cosmetology career and possibly go to college with the dream to cheer there.”
