Karson Howerton is a senior at Fairview High School. Karson participates in golf, football, FCA, FFA, and NHS. Karson began playing golf when he was in the sixth grade after his parents introduced it to him. His favorite part about it is getting to be competitive without having to worry about severe injury. “It’s nice to calmly play a sport, but also have the competitiveness,” Karson says. The highest moment of his golfing career so far, was coming in as a freshman and placing top ten in a tournament. His favorite sports moment was when he chipped in a birdie from about 70 in front of his whole team.
Karson’s biggest positive impact has been his mom. “She’s supported me through every high and low, and never judged but always criticized when needed,” he says. His biggest role model has been his dad. Karson says “he’s always excelled at showing me how to do things and letting me learn rather than hoping I’d just figure it out.” When things get tough, Karson says that God helps him through it, and he wouldn’t be who or where he is without Him.
Karson’s favorite subject in school is science, because he’s always been good at it and it runs in his family. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Goodson, because she was always positive, no matter how tired she was. In his free time, Karson likes to go on fun dates with his girlfriend. After high school, he plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, studying to be a dietitian.
To Karson, being a great athlete means to put in the hard work and not just relying on talent. Sports have taught him that although there will be ups and downs, you have to continue to stand firm. His advice to other athletes is not to get caught up in hate or praise. Karson says “If you let your conscience waver, then you’ll forget about what you should truly be doing.”
