Fairview High School’s Hunter Kimball

Fairview High School sophomore Hunter Kimball is carving out an identity as a steady, thoughtful competitor in cross country, blending discipline with a clear sense of purpose.

Kimball, who will enter his sophomore year this fall, already owns a personal best of 18:09 in the 5K, a mark that reflects both consistency and growth. His approach to racing is as strategic as it is physical. “On a long competition run I usually think about how people around me are running and how to pass them without burning too much energy,” he said.

That mindset has been shaped in part by those around him, especially cross country coach Randi Lackey. “She is always out doing something whether it’s running, biking or various other activities,” Kimball said. “She has also run several marathons including the Boston Marathon several times.” The example set by Lackey has helped reinforce the habits and resilience required for distance running.

Kimball also credits his teammates for pushing him forward, particularly one runner who stands out. “Cory, because he is always trying his best to push me while in practice and in races, and he’s always trying to improve,” Kimball said.

Beyond competition, Kimball values the relationships built through the sport. “The thing I most enjoy about being a part of the team is how close we all are and how much we bond over the shared experience of long-distance running,” he said.

His training preferences reflect a love for both challenge and scenery. “Whether it’s for fun or for practice I always prefer to run in wooded areas with lots of hills,” Kimball said. That terrain not only builds endurance but also mirrors the mental toughness he continues to develop.

Kimball’s interest in science carries into his broader goals. He named science as his favorite subject and pointed to Mrs. Haworth, who teaches Spanish and home economics at Fairview High School, as his favorite teacher. Looking ahead, he has clear ambitions. “After I graduate I plan to attend a vet school. Once I have achieved that I can figure out where I would like to work,” he said.

Away from competition, Kimball keeps a balanced routine. He enjoys spending time with his cat, reading and playing video games, providing a counterweight to the demands of training and racing.

His involvement is not limited to cross country. Kimball is also a member of the track team, extending his commitment to running across multiple seasons. Locally, he finds comfort and motivation in a familiar setting. “My favorite place in Fairview is probably the track,” he said.

Perhaps the most lasting lesson Kimball carries comes from the sport itself. “Athletics has taught me that no matter how hard it is if you keep trying you will succeed,” he said. He also leans on simple but effective advice: “Run loose and relaxed. Without that I would be much slower than I am.”

As Kimball continues to develop, his combination of focus, humility and determination positions him as a runner to watch at Fairview High School.
