The programs at Northwest Technology Center offer area students the opportunity to get a head start on a future career or to be introduced to a subject they want to learn more about. Harper Houston, a senior at Alva High School, is in the Digital Design program, and though she decided on it for the credits, she says that she has learned a lot while in the program.
“I had heard such great things about Digital Design, however, I first enrolled in the class to earn my computer credits,” she recalled. “ But I have grown to love my program. I have learned so many new and interesting things throughout this class. I’m not a technology guru, but I have learned various ins and outs of computers and how they work. There are so many jobs that need someone with a decent knowledge of computers. I’m very grateful I got the opportunity to learn this information that will stick with me into my future career.”
Houston attends the Alva Campus of Northwest Technology Center, and she was swayed to attend after hearing about it from her brother.
“My big brother used to attend Northwest Tech,” she said. “He was always telling me how much fun he had in his classes. It was pretty much a given that I would attend when I got to high school.”
When asked if she would recommend Northwest Tech to another student, Harper had no doubt what she would say.
“I would tell them that these programs are designed to show students how to flourish in the workplace,” she said. “They do such an amazing job at this. Not only has Northwest Tech showed me a new way of thinking, but they have also shown me how to be prepared for my future.”
Harper plans to attend Oklahoma State University after she graduates, and she will work to obtain a degree in management with a concentration in Business Sustainability and Non-Profit management. She says that this will help her in her future plans.
“I hope to someday manage or run an impactful non-profit organization.”
