Balancing academics, sports, and career goals is no easy task, but Alva High School junior Demy Stewart makes it look effortless. A dedicated golfer and cheerleader, Demy thrives on competition and connection. “You get to meet new people and develop friendships at every tournament you go to,” she says, recalling her favorite golf memory, chipping into the hole during a Murphy-style tournament and hearing her teammates erupt in excitement.
While her accomplishments on the course and sidelines stand out, much of Demy’s focus shines in her time at Northwest Technology Center’s Alva campus, where she’s enrolled in the Biomedical Science program. Inspired by her siblings, both former BioMed students, Demy decided to follow in their footsteps and see firsthand what made the program so special. “They loved it so much that they encouraged me to go and see why they loved it,” she explains.
The BioMed program has given Demy a unique look into the medical field, exposing her to the fundamentals of healthcare and the variety of careers available. “It allows you to get a look into what being in a medical career is like,” she says. “This class also shows different career options you could pursue, to better scope out what you want to be.” Over two years at Tech, Demy has appreciated the engaging environment, hands-on learning, and valuable preparation for college. “The Tech center has prepared me for what I should expect in college,” she notes, “pushing me to strive to do my best and learn the most I can.”
Outside the classroom, Demy stays active in the Student Council and her First Baptist Church youth group. She credits her mother as her biggest role model, someone who shows up every day with positivity and strength. After graduation, Demy plans to attend college and earn a degree, carrying with her the lessons and confidence she’s gained at Northwest Tech. For students considering the program, her advice is simple: “Go for it! Tech is a great place to learn new things and discover new opportunities every day.”
