Asia Blackledge, a senior at Alva High School, says that creativity and leadership go hand in hand. As a standout student and athlete, she has learned how to balance her responsibilities while exploring new opportunities at Northwest Technology Center in Alva.
Asia first heard about the Tech from a friend who told her about its welcoming atmosphere and supportive faculty. That positive environment quickly drew her in. “It truly is a positive environment where all the faculty want what is best for the students,” Asia said. “The Tech has given me so many opportunities to make new friends and grow in myself.”
Currently enrolled in the Digital Design program, Asia has found a space where her creativity can thrive. “I love to be creative and make my own personal designs for things,” she explained. “When I found out the class centered around creativity, I knew I needed to enroll.” The program has allowed her to sharpen her skills, think outside the box, and apply her ideas to projects that reflect her personal style.
Asia believes that Northwest Tech is preparing her for the future in meaningful ways. “It is up to me to show up for class and get my assignments completed,” she said. “The Tech is helping me gain responsibility and independence, which I know will help me later on.”
Her advice to students considering Tech is simple: go for it. She encourages others not to hesitate, emphasizing how many opportunities are available across different programs. For Asia, the experience has been about more than just learning a skill, it’s about developing confidence and discovering her strengths.
Outside of the classroom, Asia also looks up to strong role models. She admires Jayda Coleman and Mia Scott, two athletes she watched compete in the Women’s College World Series. “They influenced me to become a better leader for my teammates,” Asia said. “Each of them made a big impact on their team and stepped up in big moments.”
Looking ahead, Asia plans to attend college, pursue a degree in Health and Sports Science, and, if possible, continue playing basketball. With her creativity, determination, and leadership, she is ready to take on whatever comes next.
