Alva Goldbugs Football Preview – Presented by Farm Credit of Western Oklahoma

ALVA GOLDBUGS

Coach: TBD

7-6

OFFENSE

The Goldbugs had a solid season last year, advancing to the Class 2A quarterfinals before having their season ended. As they enter this year, they will lean on the experience from last season and also look for younger players to step up and fill in open positions. Campbell Gaisford (6-0, 175, Sr.) is back at quarterback and will lead the offense. He ended last season with 1,649 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. Returning to play running back is Lantz Mathers (6-0, 205, Sr.), who had a dominant season a year ago with 1,348 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He should continue to have a major impact on the team’s offensive game plan. On the outside looking to build off his 230 receiving yards last season is wide receiver Kash Shipley (6-5, 180, Sr.). Joining him at receiver will be Hunter Pfleider (5-8, 135, Sr.). Taking care of leading the blocking on the offensive line will be Wyatt Tucker (6-4, 230, Sr.) and Trace Hamilton (6-3, 210, Jr.).

DEFENSE

The defensive unit for the Goldbugs will look to play fast and physical. They will be led by an experienced group at linebacker. Hagan Wiersig (5-10, 200, Sr.), Mathers, and Pfleider all three had solid years last season and they are not expected to let up this year. They combined for 353 tackles and two interceptions as a group. Anchoring the defensive line and looking to wreak havoc on the opposing offense will be Shawn Hamlett (6-3, 180, Jr.) and Hamilton. Working in the secondary and hoping to shut down any big pass plays will be defensive back Jantz Heaton (6-0, 160, Sr.). Assistant coaches for the team this season are Marcus Mead, Ryne Wilson, Derrick Thomas, Dalton Beeler, and John Johnson.
