The Alva Goldbugs baseball team is entering the new season with a youthful roster full of potential and passion. While the team is young, Head Coach Derrick Thomas believes the close-knit nature of his players will be one of their biggest strengths this spring.
Many of these Goldbugs have been playing baseball together since they were six or seven years old. That long history has built more than just familiarity; it has created a sense of trust that shows every time they take the field. “They’ve grown up side by side, learned how to win and lose together, and that’s rare in high school baseball,” Coach Thomas said.
Although the roster leans young, Alva still features a few upperclassmen who bring important experience and leadership. Several juniors and a handful of seniors anchor the lineup, setting the tone for the rest of the team. Their presence gives the Goldbugs a solid foundation as younger players adjust to the speed and precision of varsity competition.
Coach Thomas emphasizes development and teamwork over individual stats. His approach focuses on improving with each game, whether that means cleaner fielding, smarter base running, or more disciplined at-bats. The goal is steady progress and playing their best baseball when it matters most. “We’re building something that’s not just for this season, but for the future of Alva baseball,” Thomas noted.
The Goldbugs’ schedule won’t be easy, but that doesn’t shake their confidence. They plan to use their deep bonds and shared experience to stay competitive against tough area opponents. For a group that’s been playing together for over a decade, chemistry won’t be a problem, and with their mix of youthful energy and veteran guidance, the Alva Goldbugs are eager to prove they belong among Oklahoma’s most disciplined and determined high school teams.
