CHEROKEE CHIEFS
Coach: BRYCE SCHANBACHER
6-6
OFFENSE
The Cherokee Chiefs put together a strong campaign last season, advancing to the Class B quarterfinals. While they ultimately fell short of their championship ambitions, head coach Bryce Schanbacher is optimistic about the road ahead. “We have a good group returning and will add a few younger players to the roster that we think have the potential to help us right away,” Schanbacher said. “This team has some big goals, and we’re excited for the upcoming season.” At the heart of the offense will be quarterback Dawson Schanbacher (6-2, 190, So.), a young talent looking to make big plays and lead the Chiefs on a deep playoff run. In the backfield, junior running back Trig Ream (6-2, 185) will provide a dynamic ground game with his knack for finding open lanes. The offense also boasts two reliable tight ends — Joel Parker (6-1, 195, Sr.) and Clayton Roach (6-0, 205, Sr.) — both of whom have put in impressive offseason work and are ready to contribute both as blockers and pass-catchers. On the outside, senior wide receiver Tony Macias (5-10, 155) will be a key target, known for his high football IQ and ability to create separation. Up front, junior Antonio Banderas (5-11, 235) will anchor the offensive line, providing the protection and push needed to keep the offense moving. With a solid returning core and promising young talent, the Chiefs are eager to chase their big goals this season.
DEFENSE
The Cherokee defense is determined to be stronger and stingier this season. Last year, the Chiefs allowed an average of 24 points per game but impressively held five opponents to single digits — a mark they’re looking to improve on by limiting big plays and tightening up across the board. A key area of focus will be the secondary. Senior strong safety Gavin Guffy (5-8, 150), along with cornerbacks Tony Macias and Trig Ream, will be tasked with shutting down opposing passing attacks and keeping receivers in check. At linebacker, senior Joel Parker will play a crucial role, keeping his head on a swivel as he reads both the run and the pass. Up front, the Chiefs will look to disrupt offenses early with senior nose guard Joe Dooley (6-1, 245) and senior defensive end Aiden Hall (6-1, 240) leading the charge in the trenches. With talent and experience spread across all levels of the defense, Cherokee is set on making life difficult for opponents this season.
