Gentry Long, a junior at Laverne High School, is the kind of athlete who thrives when things get tough. Whether he’s grinding through miles on a cross-country course, sprinting on the track, or stepping onto the football field, he carries a quiet determination that defines who he is. His junior year stands as a defining chapter, helping lead his team to a state championship while finishing as an individual state runner-up in cross country.
“Winning State as a team and finishing runner-up individually my junior year is something I’ll never forget.”
For Gentry, success didn’t come without sacrifice. Early mornings, long runs, and pushing through exhaustion shaped more than his athletic ability, they built his character. He credits running with teaching him lessons that stretch far beyond competition.
“Running has taught me discipline, resilience, and showing up on hard days while pushing through discomfort.”
Those lessons carry into every part of his life, including the classroom. One person who has had a lasting impact on him is Coach Woods, who has guided him both on the football field and in U.S. history class.
“He puts everyone first, supports you in every sport, and is someone you can always count on.”
Off the field, Gentry stays grounded through his involvement in his church youth group and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His faith and family are central to who he is, especially his mom’s influence.
“She sacrifices everything, and seeing her dedication makes me want to give my full effort in every aspect of life.”
He also draws inspiration from those around him, including teammate Marvin Barrera, whose perseverance through injuries has left a lasting impression.
Despite individual success, Gentry’s favorite part of being an athlete is representing something bigger than himself, his school, his teammates, and his community.
“My favorite part is carrying my school’s name with pride and knowing my effort reflects everyone around me.”
Guided by the advice, “It may be hard right now, but you are living through what you once prayed for,” Gentry continues to chase his goals with purpose, passion, and relentless effort.
