Cherokee’s Autumn McMahan – Golf Spotlight

For Cherokee High School freshman Autumn McMahan, success on the golf course is already becoming a familiar feeling. Competing as the team’s No. 1 bag, Autumn enters her high school career with an impressive résumé built through years of dedication on the junior circuit. With three top-five finishes on the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour and a fourth-place finish at the Under Armour Summer Nationals in Florida, she has shown she can compete with some of the best young golfers in the game.

That momentum has carried seamlessly into her freshman season. In just her first two high school tournaments, Autumn made an immediate impact by winning her first event and following it up with a top-10 finish. For a program that is just getting re-established, her presence brings both excitement and leadership.

Golf, however, has shaped Autumn in ways that go far beyond scores and trophies.

“The sport of golf has taught me responsibility and dedication. Golf is a sport that has a lot of ups and downs, just like life. The more I work on what I’m trying to accomplish, the stronger I become. I have learned that just because I have a bad round, not to give up on myself and trust that all my hard work will pay off.”

Her approach to the game mirrors the lessons she’s learned off the course, especially from those closest to her.

“My dad is my inspiration. He shows me to always keep working hard, no matter what happens. He shows me that even if things aren’t going your way to just keep trying and never give up.”

As Cherokee rebuilds its golf program, Autumn embraces the opportunity to be a leader. She credits friends like Norman North standout Harlow Gregory for pushing her to improve, while also leaning on the support of her favorite teacher, Mrs. Gayla Failes, who has always been a positive presence in her life.

Now, Autumn is driven by something bigger than individual success.

“I have played in a lot of golf tournaments over the last 3 years and all of them I’ve been playing just for my own achievements. Playing for my school will be so much more than just me; now I’m playing for Coach Guffy, my town and my teammates.”

With talent, perspective, and a strong foundation of support, Autumn McMahan is poised to lead Cherokee into a new era of success.
