At Fairview High School, senior Ray Walters has learned how to balance the demands of athletics, academics, and a part-time education at Northwest Technology Center. Whether he’s on the football field, in the weight room, or behind a camera at Tech, Ray is giving his all to every opportunity that comes his way.
A two-time state football champion, Ray has already built an impressive athletic résumé. “In football, I enjoy playing with my friends; they’re like family to me,” he said. “Every one of them helps me be something great.” His most memorable moments came when Fairview won back-to-back state titles during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He also competes in powerlifting, where he enjoys meeting new people and challenging himself.
Ray credits Coach Nelson as his biggest influence. “He pushes me more than any coach I’ve ever had,” Ray said. “He helps me with any problems or questions, and his workouts are on another level. The mood he sets in the weight room, whether it’s the music or his speeches, just makes you want to be better.”
Outside of sports, Ray stays active in FCCLA, FCA, and Business Professionals of America, organizations that let him explore his interests and leadership skills. At Northwest Tech’s Fairview campus, Ray is enrolled in the Marketing, Video, and Business (MVB) program. “I first heard about Tech through tours we took in middle school,” he explained. “What made me interested was how kind everyone was and the atmosphere there.”
The MVB program has helped Ray discover new creative outlets. “I’ve learned how to make movies, use Photoshop, and take pictures with real cameras,” he said. “It’s also helping me prepare to open my own restaurant one day.”
After graduation, Ray hopes to attend OSU Tech to study culinary arts. His long-term goal is to work in a high-end restaurant and, eventually, open one of his own. With his drive, creativity, and dedication, Ray is already building the foundation for a future full of flavor and success.
