2025 Kingfisher Boys Basketball Preview – Presented by Tony’s Pump & Supply

The Kingfisher boys basketball team enters the new season with a strong defensive identity and a growing sense of chemistry under the direction of head coach Colby Connel.

Connel, a 2009 graduate of Bethany High School, went on to play four years at Southern Nazarene University (SNU). After his playing career, he began coaching at SNU before joining Edmond Memorial as an assistant. Now in his third year at Kingfisher, Connel continues to build a program rooted in discipline, defense, and teamwork.

In just his second season, Connel led Kingfisher to 18 wins, and now the team looks to build on that success. The team hopes its defensive focus will translate into faster offensive play and, ultimately, a trip to the Class 4A state tournament.

“Our goal is to make it to the 4A state tournament,” Connel said.

Connel emphasizes chemistry as a vital part of the team’s success, both on and off the court.

“We build chemistry by trying to find ways to be together,” Connel said. “In the summer we go to a few different team camps and stay in hotels so we can just be together.”

He believes the team’s bond directly affects their performance.

“On the court we build chemistry by thinking about our teammates as much as possible,” said Connel, who values a selfless mindset. “Inward-thinking thoughts kill chemistry.”

Kingfisher’s defensive improvement has been a major focus, and Connel expects that intensity to fuel their offense.

“This team will be physical and active,” Connel said.

Practices are designed to set that tone from the start.

“Practices start with some shots and skill work. Then we get right into our defensive segment,” Connel said. “The expectation is to be loud and fly around.”

Competition is another key piece of Kingfisher’s identity.

“Our biggest thing is finding ways to compete,” Connel said. “If you can win something in practice, do it!”

As Kingfisher prepares for the upcoming season, the message remains clear – defense, energy, and unity will drive their success. With a coach who values connection and competition, the Kingfisher boys basketball team is ready to chase their goal of reaching the state tournament.
