The Canton High School cheerleading squad is kicking off another exciting season filled with spirit, determination, and strong team bonds. Under the leadership of their dedicated coach, Kayce Thompson, the team is already showing their dedication, both on and off the sidelines.

“I always look forward to working with a new squad,” Coach Thompson shared. “It’s fun to see friendships emerge and personalities blossom.”

This year’s squad brings a unique mix of energy, talent, and drive, with each cheerleader contributing something special to the team dynamic. Senior cheerleaders Nadia Luna, Camden Lee, and Gabriella Elias-Ramirez are already stepping up as strong leaders. Their leadership will be key in guiding the younger members through the highs and challenges of the season.

“I’m so proud of all of my cheerleaders, but these three have really stepped up and taken on a leadership role,” Coach Thompson said.

The year begins with the squad’s beloved annual lock-in, a fun-filled event focusing on team bonding and kicking off the season with spirit. The team is also looking forward to Spirit Day at Oklahoma State University. This is another favorite tradition that fuels their passion for cheerleading.

While the squad’s high standards are inspiring, their pursuit of perfection can sometimes add pressure.

“They’re always looking for new and improved routines, which is fun and every coach’s dream,” said Coach Thompson. “But they don’t want to disappoint anyone with a subpar performance. This sometimes leads to some tension.”

Despite any of the challenges this season, the team always finds time to enjoy each other. Whether on long road trips to ballgames, holiday celebrations such as a Christmas party, or simply creating locker signs, the team always finds a way to have fun. These moments have built a strong foundation of trust and camaraderie.

A goal for this year set by Coach Thompson is to encourage the squad to embrace new things and step outside their comfort zones.

“We sometimes find ourselves in a rut,” Coach Thompson shared. “I want to encourage this squad to break outside of that box.”

Coach Thompson understands her role is beyond just coaching the athletes in cheer. The cheerleaders look to their coach for guidance and as a role model

“Positive communication is key,” Coach Thompson emphasized. “I always promote a positive outlook with my team.”

Above all, what makes this team truly special is that each cheerleader brings something unique.

“I love getting to learn about all of them,” Coach Thompson said. “Each one has something special and unique to offer.”
