Samuel Wood, 18, is a senior at Dover High School. He moved from Kingfisher to Dover to advance his career in golf. Wood participates in Student Council, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), NHS, OHS and the Oklahoma Youth Tour. Samuel spent a week in Washington, D.C. He attends the First Baptist Church in Kingfisher.
The Dover FCA group, 25-30 strong, meets weekly for a devotional during lunch. Shannen Nance, along with teachers and students, leads FCA. Shannen told me Sam is vital to the group with his senior leadership.
Sam mentioned that he is considering attending college and participating in golf. He is considering multiple junior college programs. He wants to major in Business Administration and become part of the PGA Head Professional Program.
Sam has several highlights from his high school golf career, with more to come this year. He qualified for the Class 2A State Championship last year and remembers the first tee box in the state tournament. Chris Combs is Sam Wood’s golf coach. He wants Sam to continue to work hard on his game and in the weight room. He needs to improve his short game (don’t we all!) and be at his best qualifying for next year’s 2A State Tournament.
I talked with Dover High School Principal Nathan Nance about Wood. Mr. Nance talked about what a great young man Sam Wood is. He called him a silent leader who leads by example.
I ask Sam what advice he would give a young student entering high school. He thought a moment and replied, “find joy in the improvement each day, stay focused. Don’t worry about what others are doing, everyone starts in a different place.”
Sam Wood is making a difference at Dover High School!
