COVINGTON-DOUGLAS WILDCATS
Coach: Brian Smith
12-1
OFFENSE
The Wildcats ended last season with a 12-1 record and a trip to the Class B semifinals. As they head into a new season, head coach Brian Smith will look for guys to step up and fill the roles of those who graduated. “We graduated six seniors who were on the field the majority of the time, many had started or played a lot since their freshman year,” the coach said. “We have a lot of production to replace, but we do have some solid younger players who have waited their turn. The quarterback position will be a competition in the spring and into the fall, as we must replace a guy who threw for over 8,200 yards in his career. Offensive line and tight end depth are a strength of the 2025 team.” Grayson Marler (5-11, 195, Jr.) will be a force at running back again this season after totaling 483 yards on the ground last year. Another guy that will impact the season is Justus Halcomb (6-1, 155, Jr.), who will see time at split end and quarterback. Last season, he ended with 514 receiving yards and 221 rushing yards. Rylan Fisher (5-7, 225, Sr.) is a playmaker who will be called on to make some big plays at both tight end and running back. Anchoring the offensive line are Micah Chartier (6-4, 200, Sr.) and Braden Thayer (5-8, 220, Sr.)
DEFENSE
The defense is in a similar situation to the offense, losing six starters and a lot of production. But the group that they do have back is a solid one to build around. Fisher will be at linebacker and is the returning leading tackler with 144, six of them were for a loss. Joining him at linebacker and also seeing time at defensive end will be Marler, who had 81 tackles and four sacks last season. Thayer and Hadyen Willard (6-0, 195, Jr.) combined for 106 tackles on the defensive line last season, and they will look to continue to disrupt their opponents. Defensive back Justus Halcomb (6-1, 155, Jr.) will be patrolling the secondary and looking to slow down the opposition’s big plays.
