Dover’s Sam Wood – Presented by Advantage Eye Care

Sam Wood is a junior at Dover High School. He participates in golf, FCA, broadcasting, and STUCO. Sam has been participating in golf since he was in the 7th grade. His favorite part about it is getting to map out different strategies for each course and round. “I could play the same course differently every day,” Sam says. His favorite moment in golf so far, was placing fifth at Hefner South, even though it was windy.

Sam’s biggest positive impacts have been his dad and his golf coach, Coach Chris Combs. “They have always been two of my biggest supporters and have always believed in me; allowing me to believe in myself,” Sam says. His biggest role model has been Arnold Palmer, because he was a good sportsman and courteous to others while still being a fierce competitor.

Sam’s golf coach, Coach Combs says “Sam is fun to coach because not only is he a hard worker and not afraid to put the time in, but is a sponge when it comes to learning.  He’s made great strides over the last 6 months, and I’m excited to see him continue to grow the rest of this school season and into the summer.”

Sam’s favorite subject in school is history because he gets to read about great leaders and empires of history. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Haub, because she’s always been very patient and loving, and always wanted the best for him. In his free time, Sam devotes his time to golf. After high school, Sam plans to continue playing golf and pursue a business degree in college.

To Sam, being a great athlete means being mentally strong. Sports have taught him how to be a good sport, and has helped him become tougher mentally and physically. His advice to other athletes is to stay in the moment; good or bad, and not to think about where you’re placing.
