Rien Buehrer is a student at Alva High School and she also attends Northwest Technology Center. She is in the Biomed II program at the Alva campus and along with learning a lot of things in that program, she says that she also feels like it is also helping her to be ready for life after high school in other ways.
“They prepare you for college, and it is much more similar to college than high school,” she said. “They treat you like you are adults, and prepare you by trying to teach you problem solving on your own. They teach this skill beautifully, and it is something you need not just within school.”
She first heard about Northwest Technology Center from students at her school and she says that she chose her program because of what she wanted to do with her future.
“I heard about the tech center from my upper class men and they always made the tech center sound fun,” she said. “They all recommended that I would love to go there. I was thinking about going into the medical field or being a detective, and the opportunities I had heard about that came from Biomed such as HOSA really caught my eye.”
After graduation, Rien plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in Education.
“I want to move back to Alva and become a high school math teacher, as well as a coach.”
At Alva, Buehrer plays softball, runs track, and is the manager for the Ladybug basketball team. Being a softball player, Rien says there are a few people that have had an impact on her.
“Paige Parker, a pitcher from OU, made me love the game of softball, and got me hooked from the moment I watched her play,” she said. “A big role model for me would be my first ever 8U coaches that shaped the player I am today, and have continued to follow along with my career in softball.”
Outside of athletics, Buehrer is also a part of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. She is involved in the Key Club and helps with many community service projects.
